What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a metal screw, usually made of titanium, designed to replace the root portion of a missing tooth.
After an oral and maxillofacial surgeon has placed a dental implant, your dentist will top it with a natural-looking tooth replacement, such as a denture or crown.
Implants can be used to replace a single lost tooth or many missing teeth. They provide a stable, permanent solution to missing teeth that can protect your oral health from further deterioration.
In addition to aesthetic benefits, replacing missing teeth can improve bite issues or jaw joint pain, restore facial tissues and appearance, and help you chew and speak properly.
Why Replace Missing Teeth?
When a tooth is missing, the nearby teeth can start to shift into the empty space, which may lead to misalignment. Over time, the bone in that area can also begin to break down, reducing support for the surrounding teeth and potentially causing even more tooth loss.
The Dental Implant Process
The dental implant process involves a small titanium screw, an abutment, and a custom tooth replacement.
If you need a dental implant, your dentist will refer you to a local oral and maxillofacial surgeon who will place the implant into your jaw bone beneath the gum line. As you heal over the next three to six months, the implant will fuse with the bone and surrounding gum tissue.
Once everything has healed, you’ll return to our office to complete the treatment. At this point, your dentist will attach a custom-made tooth replacement, like a crown, bridge, or denture, that looks and functions just like a natural tooth and is designed to blend in with the rest of your smile.
